The Summary

  • The version of Google Analytics BigCommerce currently supports is going away in 2023.
  • The new version (GA4) is not yet supported by BigCommerce but is planned for later this year.
  • Update: BigCommerce partially now supports GA4 – learn how it compares with Tag Rocket
  • Tag Rocket provided its tried and tested GA4 solution for free throughout 2022 – see below for steps.

The Details

Google recently announced that on July 1st 2023, standard Universal Analytics (GA3) properties will stop processing new hits.

This is the version of Google Analytics that BigCommerce supports, and so is the version used by most stores.

Later, Google will delete all the data, which means most stores will lose all their historical Google Universal Analytics data.

Google has been working on Google Analytics Four (GA4) as its replacement over the last few years. It’s an entirely new system with new data and reports and will not inherit any data from GA3. You will have to start from scratch.

The loss of data is why Google said this:

We strongly encourage you to make the switch to Google Analytics 4 as soon as possible. Doing so will allow you to build the necessary historical data and usage in the new experience, preparing you for continuity once Universal Analytics is no longer available.

Universal Analytics will be going away

BigCommerce is working on fully supporting GA4 sometime later in the year. Other available solutions are either simplistic or hard to implement and still incomplete.

So we have decided to bridge the gap.

Our Tag Rocket app already supports enhanced eCommerce for GA4 and more and has been tried, tested and improved for over 12 months. However, it does usually cost $22/month.

We’ve decided to let people use our GA4 solution for free in 2022, while BigCommerce is working on releasing its free solution. That way, stores can “build the necessary historical data” now. GA4 is easy to set up with Tag Rocket:

  1. Create Your GA4 property
  2. Install Tag Rocket
  3. Switch on GA4 in the app’s dashboard
  4. Enter your GA4 Measurement ID
  5. Publish

And you instantly have Enhanced Ecommerce tracking and more in GA4!

Support & Functionality Limitations

Join our Facebook Support Group to ask questions.

We are a team of two that pride ourselves on our level of support. Providing in-person support for our free GA4 offer would stretch our support capabilities beyond their limit.

Therefore, our support for the free GA4 will be limited to our articles, guides (see the menu to the left) and Facebook Group, with no in-person support. Customers who subscribe to Tag Rocket will get full support, including access to our special custom GA4 reports.

Tag Rocket supports many other tags, and we will prioritise subscribers for our in-person support for these.

To manage our server resources efficiently during this free offer period, server-side functionality such as Facebook CAPI & the server events for Google Analytics 4 (Server-Side Purchase & Refund Events) will only be available for subscribed customers.
